How does Acupuncture work?
Daily stresses, lifestyle choices and injury upset our natural balance and lead to physical and emotional symptoms. The theory of acupuncture is that energy circulates around the body in channels. When this flow of energy is damaged, imbalance occurs resulting in illness.
With the insertion of ultra fine needles at various points on the body, the energy can be moved, released or redirected to where it is needed most. In this way the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.
MRI scans have shown that acupuncture triggers the body’s healing process by calming the central nervous system, regulating hormones and releasing endorphins.
The Benefits of Acupuncture
Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps resolve your main problem but also enhances your feeling of general wellbeing. You may notice other niggling problems resolve. You are likely to sleep better and feel less stressed.
What is treatment like?
Rest assured that acupuncture needles are nothing like hypodermic needles. They are only slightly larger than the width of a human eyebrow hair and are pliable enough to be curled like a ribbon with just the fingertips.
Often patients report that acupuncture treatments are extremely relaxing and it is not unheard of to fall asleep during treatments. This is because acupuncture stimulates your brain to release endorphins, your body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which helps to calm your sympathetic nervous system, and takes you from that insidious, high-stress “fight-or-flight” mode, to a nice, peaceful “rest-and-relax” mode.
The needles I use are made from a high grade of surgical steel, and are pre-packed, sterile, single-use, and disposable.
